Examination by an endocrinologist specialist

Endocrinology is a branch of internal medicine that deals with the study of the human endocrine system, i.e. glands with internal secretion and the hormones they produce.

The endocrine system is one of the most important systems of the human body, because it is responsible for the control, communication and fine coordination of almost all metabolic processes in the body. Hormones secreted by these glands travel through the bloodstream and affect growth, development, metabolism, reproduction and mood.

In our polyclinic in Kragujevac, an experienced team of experts is dedicated to accurate diagnosis and treatment of all endocrine gland disorders, with the aim of restoring the necessary hormonal balance to patients.

Special care for pregnant women: The period of pregnancy brings enormous hormonal changes that require careful monitoring.

Our expert team performs detailed diagnostics, treatment and continuous monitoring of pregnant women with endocrinological disorders (such as gestational diabetes or thyroid disorders). Adequate endocrinological control is an absolute prerequisite for healthy and safe fetal development, as well as for a safe pregnancy.

The most common symptoms and diseases

Hormonal imbalance often produces very vague and general symptoms that patients often attribute to fatigue or stress. Early recognition of these signs prevents the development of serious chronic diseases.

What symptoms require examination?

  • Chronic fatigue, sleepiness and low energy
  • Unexplained variations in body weight (sudden weight loss or weight gain)
  • Increased sweating, palpitations and nervousness
  • Excessive thirst and frequent urination
  • Hair loss and skin changes (dryness, acne)
  • Irregular menstrual cycles and problems with conception

The most common endocrinological diseases:

  • Thyroid gland: Increased (hyperthyroidism) or decreased function (hypothyroidism), Hashimoto's syndrome and thyroid tumors.
  • Pancreas: Diabetes (sugar disease) and insulin resistance.
  • Bone metabolism: Osteopenia and osteoporosis.
  • Reproductive system: Infertility (sterility) and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
  • Metabolic disorders: Obesity and disorders of fat metabolism.

The course of examination and modern diagnostics

The endocrinological examination begins with a detailed history taking. The doctor collects information about current ailments, previous illnesses and family history (genetic predisposition). Careful observation of the patient's appearance (changes in the skin, hair, distribution of fat tissue) can often provide very useful clues to an accurate diagnosis.

After the conversation, a clinical examination follows, which necessarily includes palpation of the neck, which informs the doctor about the size, structure and other characteristics of the thyroid gland.

Based on the clinical examination, the endocrinologist makes a working diagnosis and gives recommendations for further steps. In order for the diagnosis to be definitive, it is usually necessary to perform specific tests laboratory analyzes of hormones, ultrasound (echo) of the neck and thyroid gland, and in rarer situations, the patient is referred for CT or MR examinations of the adrenal glands or pituitary gland. Only after a complete assessment of the condition, adequate and targeted therapy is prescribed.
