Specialist examination by an infectious disease specialist

Infectology is a branch of medicine that deals with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases caused by various microorganisms, such as bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites.

Infectious diseases can affect any organ or organ system in the body, and their symptoms can often be general and non-specific. Therefore, the role of an infectious disease doctor is crucial in the accurate recognition of the true causative agent and the determination of targeted therapy.

The examination by an infectious disease specialist is completely painless, does not require special preparation and is based on a detailed interview, careful clinical examination and analysis of laboratory parameters.

An important note about the use of antibiotics: An elevated body temperature is the most common sign of infection, but it does not always mean that it is a bacterial infection.

Never take antibiotics on your own. Improper use of these drugs in viral infections does not help, but leads to the development of bacterial resistance (resistance) and impairment of immunity. Leave it to the infectious disease specialist to determine whether and which medicine you really need.

When to visit an infectious disease specialist and what the examination includes

Patients are most often referred to an infectious disease specialist by a general practitioner when the primary treatment does not produce results, when the symptoms are unclear or prolonged, as well as in unclear febrile conditions.

The most common reasons for visiting:

  • A vague fever that lasts for days
  • Suspected tick bite and Lyme disease (redness on the skin that spreads)
  • Enlarged and painful lymph nodes in the neck, armpit or groin
  • Unexplained skin rash accompanied by fever
  • Suspicion of mononucleosis, hepatitis or other viral infections
  • Prolonged cough, malaise and chronic fatigue
  • Returning from a trip to exotic and tropical regions

Examination flow:

  • Anamnesis: A detailed discussion about the onset of symptoms, previous illnesses, travels, contacts with patients and possible insect bites.
  • Physical examination: Examination of the pharynx, palpation of lymph nodes, liver and spleen, as well as examination of the skin.
  • Interpretation of findings: Analysis of blood count, CRP, sedimentation and biochemistry.
  • Additional diagnostics: Giving instructions for smears, blood cultures or specific serological tests (antibodies).
  • Therapy: Determination of targeted antibiotic, antiviral or symptomatic therapy.

Our approach to treating infections

Each infection is specific and requires a careful and studious approach. In our polyclinic, an infectious disease specialist devotes enough time to each patient in order to reveal even the most hidden causes of ailments.

Whether it is minor respiratory and intestinal infections, or more complex conditions such as systemic infections and Lyme disease, our goal is to quickly establish an accurate diagnosis and include therapy that will lead to complete healing and recovery of your body in the shortest possible time.
