How do varicose veins occur?

One of the most common health problems of modern times is varicose veins. It is thought that over 60% of people have some kind of problem related to the venous system.

Visible "knots" on the legs (varicose veins) are a direct consequence of dilated veins under the skin. Varicose veins of the legs in the initial stage can be only an aesthetic problem, but over time they lead to more serious complications.

The most common complaints that they can subsequently cause include swelling and a feeling of heaviness, pain in the legs, inflammatory processes in the veins, changes in the skin and subcutaneous tissue, as well as bleeding from varicose veins.

In the last case, if they are not treated in time, neglected veins can lead to the last stage of venous disease - venous ulceration, i.e. the appearance of open wounds on the legs.

Significance of diagnostics: Taking a detailed history and clinical examination are the necessary first step on the way to adequate treatment.

Ultrasound examination (color doppler blood vessels of the legs) is the most important examination for determining the vascular status.

It allows us to determine exactly what changes are in the venous system and at what level they are responsible for the appearance of varicose veins. Only after this examination can a precise treatment plan be made.

Which treatment method is optimal for me?

There are several modern methods of treating varicose veins. Each patient needs an individual approach to find the most adequate solution, and the method itself depends solely on the underlying reason for the appearance of varicose veins.

Local extensions:

If it is only about local enlargements without signs of insufficiency of main or perforating veins (as determined by ultrasound examination), then sclerosing with foam or liquid sclerosing agent, as well as surgical removal of enlarged veins (phlebectomy) come into consideration.

Venous insufficiency:

The situation is more complicated if there is insufficiency of the mentioned veins, and in that case it is necessary to solve the cause itself first. The therapeutically best option in this situation is laser vein surgery, a minimally invasive method that is used today with great success in the world and in our country.

Important note for patients

A detailed clinical examination of the patient is necessary in order for the treatment of varicose veins to be successful and permanent. It involves not only an isolated examination of the veins on the legs, but complete vascular (arterial and venous) status.

All the mentioned examinations and procedures are carried out by a specialist in our polyclinic vascular surgeon, which deals exclusively with diseases and operations on blood vessels.
