Ultrasound examination of the breast

Breast ultrasound is a non-invasive, completely safe and highly reliable diagnostic method that uses high-frequency sound waves to create an image of the inside of the breast.

Unlike mammography, during this examination the patient is not exposed to harmful X-ray radiation, the method is completely painless and does not cause any discomfort. In our polyclinic in Kragujevac, this examination is routinely performed on state-of-the-art devices that provide a crystal clear image of the tissue.

Ultrasound is the primary and sovereign method of choice for diagnosing changes in younger women, but it is often used as a supplementary method after mammography in older patients, in order to more precisely determine the nature of possible changes (for example, whether it is a fluid-filled cyst or a solid tumor).

When is the best time to do an examination? Due to hormonal changes that affect tissue density and fluid retention, breast ultrasound is the most optimal and accurate way to do it. between days 5 and 12 of the menstrual cycle (counting from the first day of bleeding).

Then the breasts are the least tense, which allows the doctor the clearest insight into the structure of the glandular tissue.

Who is the examination intended for?

Timely diagnostics and regular preventive examinations are the strongest weapons in preserving health. Although it is most often associated with women, this examination is often needed by men as well.

For women under 40:

The breasts of younger women (up to the age of 40) have a pronounced, dense glandular structure. This density makes examination by mammogram difficult, which is why ultrasound is an absolute recommendation and the method of first choice due to its increased sensitivity to this kind of tissue.

Every woman is advised to have a preventive ultrasound examination once a year after the age of 25, even if there are no complaints or changes during the self-examination.

Men's Examination:

Breast diseases are not exclusively a women's problem. Both women and men can do this examination to accurately monitor any changes if needed. Ultrasound is most often performed when gynecomastia is suspected (enlargement of glandular breast tissue in men) or when painless nodules, redness and discharge appear.

What does the examination itself look like?

The patient lies on his back, with his arms raised above his head, while the doctor applies a special gel to the skin that allows better conduction of sound waves. The ultrasound probe is used to go over the tissues of both breasts in detail, but the armpits (axillary region) are also examined very carefully to check the condition of the lymph nodes. The report is obtained immediately after the examination is completed.
