Urological ultrasound examination

Urological ultrasound examination (ultrasound echo) is a completely painless and non-invasive diagnostic method that performs a detailed examination of the kidneys, bladder, adrenal glands, as well as the prostate and testicles in men.

In our polyclinic in Kragujevac, this examination is routinely performed on modern high-resolution devices, which enables the doctor to perform a precise, safe and quick diagnosis of the entire urinary system.

Important note and preparation: In order for the examination of the urinary bladder (and the prostate in men) to be as accurate and reliable as possible, the bladder must be filled with urine.

It is advised to drink about a liter to a liter and a half of water (or other non-carbonated liquid) one to two hours before the examination itself and to refrain from urinating until the end of the ultrasound.

When an examination is necessary and what it reveals

This examination is recommended for people who already have severe complaints, but also as an extremely important preventive examination for people who do not have symptoms.

Indications for examination:

  • Any complaints related to urination (pain, burning, difficulty urinating)
  • Appearance of blood in the urine (hematuria)
  • Suspicion of a stone (calculosis) in the urinary tract
  • In women: Frequent inflammation of the bladder (cystitis) and pain in the lower abdomen
  • In men: Noticeable growths or pain in the testicles
  • Prevention: All men over the age of 50 for early diagnosis of enlargement (benign hyperplasia) of the prostate

What exactly does an ultrasound show:

  • Kidneys: Their position, size, structure is determined and it is assessed whether they are affected by pathological changes (stones, tumor changes, cysts).
  • Bladder: Its size, wall thickness, condition of the mucous membrane and possible presence of stones, polyps, tumors or protrusions (diverticulum) are evaluated.
  • Prostate and testicles: Their size, structure and existence of any inflammatory or tumor changes are evaluated in detail.

The course of inspection and the frequency of controls

Echo examination of the urinary tract is performed with the patient lying comfortably on his back. The doctor applies a little ultrasound gel to the skin of the abdomen (and the scrotum in men) and gently passes the probe over the examined regions. In doing so, the patient does not feel any pain or discomfort. The examination lasts from 15 to 20 minutes, after which the doctor gives the patient an oral explanation and a detailed written report.

Ultrasound methods used in diagnostics are painless and absolutely without any harmful effects (no radiation), which is why they can be repeated an unlimited number of times.

The time until the next examination is determined by the doctor solely based on the findings. In the case of a regular finding, the control is usually advised in a year, while in the case of observed pathological changes, the control is scheduled much earlier - in the period from three weeks to three months.
